Preparedness

Heading: September is National Preparedness Month
http://www.ready.gov/ - This is the Federal Emergency Management Agency's Emergency Preparedness web site.

National Preparedness Month is a nationwide effort held each September to encourage Americans to take simple steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses and schools.

The goal of the month is to increase public awareness about the importance of preparing for emergencies and to encourage individuals to take action. Throughout September, Homeland Security will work with a wide variety of organizations, including local, state and federal government agencies and the private sector, to highlight the importance of family emergency preparedness and promote individual involvement through events and activities across the nation.

Bottom Line: Be Prepared

September 11, 2009 marks the eighth anniversary of the World Trade Center disaster. Commemorate the tragedy by making sure that you are well prepared for any workplace emergency. The recent power outage on the East Coast not only shows that anything can happen at any time, but also that being prepared pays off in terms of lack of mishaps, injuries or fatalities.

Make sure you know:

• How to report an emergency situation, and to whom.
• At least two emergency evacuation routes from your work area.
• The locations of fire extinguishers, first-aid kits, etc.
• Think about how you would communicate with your family and friends if there were a power failure. Talk about this with family and come up with your own communication plan.
• Prepare a small emergency kit of personal items needed in case you could not get home for a few days. (medications, contacts/glasses, cash, clothes, etc.) Visit FEMA's Preparedness web site for suggestions for creating an emergency preparedness kit.
